The meeting – in which 37 of ECLAC’s member countries participated along with 6 associate members – was inaugurated by Rodrigo Malmierca, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment of Cuba, and Alicia Bárcena, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, who described the economic and social panorama in Latin America and the Caribbean and explained the Commission’s priorities for confronting the region’s most pressing challenges in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. On this occasion, Cuba handed the Presidency Pro Tempore over to Costa Rica, which will hold this position for the next two years. ![]() I would find it interesting to go through and analyze how they’ve developed and how they’ve evolved over the short amount of time the internet has lived.Representatives of Latin American and Caribbean countries urged for a paradigm shift in international financing that would allow for immediate responses to the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to be provided and for sustainable development to be achieved in the region, during today’s virtual meeting of the thirty-fifth session of the Committee of the Whole of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Is it ethical to monitor what a person does in their free time? Should it be left up to internet service providers to throttle any connections to sites? Or rather, should the internet be free for anyone to use in order to go onto any website they wish? All of these questions are brought up once you attempt to regulate the internet, and all of the points raised are fair. So the companies that own television services are providing a resistance to the paradigm shift that is online streaming.įurthermore, this subject of how online streaming works and how it can be monetized or regulated also brings into question the entire idea of whether or not the internet itself can be regulated. This is important as most internet service providers are also linked to television providers (i.e., Comcast Xfinity, Verizon Fios, etc.). In response to this, there has been a call to repeal net neutrality, meaning that internet providers would have the ability to throttle connections to the websites that these streaming services are run off of. While this rapidly growing streaming industry is happening, traditional television companies that run cable are growing increasingly worried about their industry as it could be obsolete. Furthermore, apps like Hulu and Amazon Prime have been bettering their platforms in order to compete with Netflix. ![]() It’s a very rapid change that is occurring as Netflix has held almost a monopoly on the streaming industry, and with more and more companies riding the wave of streaming and creating their own apps such as Disney+ and DC Universe, Netflix has a growing threat to its services. I think one of the largest shifts in how our society does things is the current shift from traditional television and cable to streaming apps like Netflix and Hulu.
